Can A Vegetarian Lifestyle Be Healthy
By: Jeff Patterson

You have surely heard people talk about how a vegetarian diet plan or a lifestyle can deprive the body of essential proteins and nutrition, which according to many can only be derived out of products of animal origin. There is a basis of such assumptions and that is many people do not do adequate research before they turn vegetarian. This results in frequent bouts of protein-energy malnutrition (PEM) or iron deficiency, along with deficiencies in zinc, calcium and vitamin B. The good news is that this type of condition can easily be avoided if only these aspiring vegetarians did a bit of research and planned their switch over in a more strategic way. The truth of the matter is that a vegetarian can have wholesome and nutritious meals, which would offer a very healthy lifestyle for the individual without any animal protein intake, or depriving the body of any nutritional needs. In fact the newly turned vegetarian can build a strong immune system as his vegetarian diet offers plenty of antioxidants.

Strange as it might seem to many, a vegetarian diet can offer limitless varieties in terms of foods and its preparation. With a 100% vegetarian diet the individual would never run out of essential vitamins and minerals, which the body needs to function optimally. You would in fact, feel more robust, healthy and energetic with a vegetarian diet plan, since your intake of cholesterol-inducing saturated fats would drop to zero level. Before you turn to a vegetarian diet plan, for whatever reasons you may have, it is important to remember some basic facts:

For proper absorption of iron, our body needs vitamin C.

For helping with the absorption and assimilation of calcium, the body needs vitamin D.

To consume complete protein it is essential to have all the 8 amino acids, though it is not necessary to have all of them with every meal.

A vegetarian diet consisting only of plant-based foods cannot provide the only one vitamin, and that is vitamin B12. But, there lots of foods, which are fortified with vitamin B12, so much so, even long-term vegetarians would never have this deficiency.

Like any diet plan, a vegetarian diet also needs to be balance. For instance, even a vegetarian diet would require you not only to concentrate on vitamins and minerals but judicious amounts of plant protein, fiber-rich vegetables and so on. If you run short of ideas regarding vegetarian food preparation, the Internet is full of varieties of vegetarian recipes, which you could easily search and locate. In fact, the variety fare that can be made with a vegetarian diet plan, is quite incredible. Remember, at the end of the day, switching to a vegetarian lifestyle would prove to be not just heart-friendly, but would improve your health and quality of life to a large extent. After a while, animal protein would just seem like a pleasure of the past.
