The generic name was dedicated in honor of German physician Friedrich Heinrich Theodor Freese (1795-1876).
The cultivated freesia
The popular “freesia” in the gardens and cut flower Freesia x hybrida is a complex hybrid based on interspecific hybridization between refracted Freesia, Freesia leictlinii, Freesia corymbose and other species of the genus, which have gained hundreds of commercial cultivars. Modern cultivars are tetraploid and display single or double flowers, bright colors (pure white, yellow, pink, orange, red and blue), although the fragrance in them is less intense than in the original species.
